Happy Birthday USA: this July 4th there are 234 candles on that really BIG cake!

Business success: The short (term) and long (term) of it

In today's business environment a focus on the short term is really important. The critical pieces that need looking into are your revenue and your costs.

Great reads at the Maricopa Public Library

Buy at least one book in the next month that will make your friends say, "You're reading that?" Read a classic - but put a strip of black electrical tape over the word "classic" if it appears anywhere on the cover or title page. Avoid any book with an exclamation point in the title. Mark in your books. Underline passages you love or hate. Argue in the margins. Reread.

Recently passed concealed carry legislation

As some of you may already know the recent concealed carry legislation that passed will become law on or about July 17, 2010.

Romero headed to Columbia to work with displaced orphans

The main purpose of my trip is not only to serve at the orphanage, but also to travel to every single one of the homes to assess the needs at each location.

Taking the ‘heat’

Heat can kill. In fact, excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather events in recent years, including floods.

Anita’s clips and tips

Did you know pool chemicals and sea salts can strip away hair's healthy oils and bind to the hair, intensifying the damaging effects of the sun?

Response to ‘Why Mexican drug cartels love Joe Arpaio’

I read with great interest Jake Romero's opinion piece regarding Mexican drug cartels and Joe Arpaio.

Why Mexican drug cartels love Joe Arpaio

This vacuum created an opportunity for Mexican drug cartels, and so they have been growing and becoming more powerful day-by-day.

What Maricopa Seniors are all about

You have seen the name, but some of you do not know who we are or what we are about. We hope to change all that; we want to improve the senior's life in Maricopa, not by our words but by our deeds.

Supervisor Snider on EPA regulations, events and the budget

Welcome to June - the month of weddings, celebrations, vacations and hot days with less hot nights. In the governmental arena, it's also the month of tentative and final budgeting and - this year - the time of serious political campaigning.

High cost of alcohol-related crashes

In 2008, there were 6,757 alcohol-related vehicle crashes across the state. More than 4,700 people were injured and 324 people were killed.

How a cookie crumbles

The temptation to eat a cookie does not start with the actual decision to take a bite.

Steve Smith: Response to Immigration Bill (SB 1070)

My name is Steve Smith. I am a proud resident of Maricopa, and I am currently running to serve as your state senator. Many people have asked me my opinion of the immigration bill (SB 1070), and my answer is simple; it is a great start for Arizona!

Sheriff addresses ongoing drug and human smuggling problem

Though the investigation continues, we have several investigative leads and have identified three other Mexican nationals, who are victims (robbed of cash and personal belongings) of the same suspects that shot Deputy Purrol.

Facts about Prop 100, the sales tax measure

Times are very difficult for our schools. A YES vote on the temporary 1-cent sales tax will not fix all the budget woes; cuts are going to be required no matter what. But voting YES will prevent cuts at a level that would be devastating to our elementary, middle and high schools.

Final pre-election day thoughts

As I sit here writing my last opinion piece of this election I am reminded of a Sinatra song (My Way) "the end is near... I'll state my case...."

COMPA candidate endorsements: Why them and why now?

Recently there have been several questions asked about COMPA, the City of Maricopa Police Association, and why we have become involved in local politics and endorsed council candidates Kimball, Marchione and Romero-Gusse.

Council member Farrell speaks out on public safety

For many years, I have strongly advocated on behalf of public safety for the citizens of Maricopa. I do not just advocate for public safety at election time, but have always been a strong advocate for public safety.

Teacher incentives

Given that I have also chosen to pursue a career in teaching, I wanted to investigate the pros and cons of teaching incentives and the different views.

Great reads at the Maricopa Public Library

French lawyer and political philosopher Charles De Secondat once said, "I've never known any trouble that an hour's reading didn't assuage."

Last night I attended the Ask the Candidate forum, and a couple of things did jump out at me.

Supervisor Snider: county budget, Prop 100, May events

Gosh - is it May already? Seems like just yesterday that I was humming the melody that accompanies "April showers bring May flowers...."

Staying the course

As the May 18th General Election nears, it's important to remind you of some of the many reasons why I'm running for your city council, and what I want to bring to Maricopa.

Why I’m endorsing Julia Romero-Gusse

This is why I am endorsing Julia Romero-Gusse for city council member in the upcoming May 18 election.

Our superior court, county attorney's office, public defender, adult probation and sheriff's office have worked together to make justice more efficient, saving our Pinal taxpayers millions in the process.

My vision for Maricopa

Election day is less than one month away. I am sharing my vision for Maricopa because the next decision each voter makes is crucial.
