Two local CrossFit affiliated gyms will be coming together at 9 a.m. Saturday at the CrossFit BattleFit Gym at 12501 N. Murphy Road off the Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway to raise money for wounded military personnel.
This will be the sixth year CrossFit will hold the nationwide event for charities while promoting fitness. About 1,000 CrossFit-affiliated gyms will participate in Fight Gone Bad 6, with almost 14,000 participants taking 17 minutes to perform intense workout exercises.
Thirty participants between the two local chapters will be competing to raise money for the CrossFit Foundation and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which started in 1980 to provide support and assistance to the families of fallen and wounded military personnel. Nationally, the goal is to raise $2 million.
For the Crossfit BattleFit Gym, the cause hits close to home. CrossFit BattleFit's co-owner, Army 1st Lt. Matthew Maxcy, returned from his deployment in Iraq. About 60 days before his unit returned it was attacked by a road side bomb and one of his soldiers lost both his legs.“When we talk about raising money to help wounded warriors, the meaning goes a little deeper for the CrossFit BattleFit family,” said Nathan Maxcy, brother of Matthew Maxcy.
Nathan Maxcy will serve as a team captain and Kelly Bradley will serve as the team captain for CrossFit Maricopa.
Nathan Maxcy welcomes anyone willing to participate and there will be a special training session held at 8 a.m. to assist those in learning the CrossFit routine. The goal for each participant is to raise $150.
