A flag raising ceremony was held this morning at the Veterans Memorial at Rotary Park by the local posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

About 60 people, including local veterans, Boys Scouts and the Maricopa High School Air Force Junior ROTC Honor Guard, attended the ceremony, which began at 8:30 a.m.

After the flag was raised, the National Anthem was sung and the Pledge of Allegiance recited.

“The veterans thank you very much for sharing this important day with them,” said Jack McLain, Maricopa VFW post commander.

The Junior ROTC program at MHS was formed in January with retired Air Force Maj. Jim Alonzo as the leader. Alonzo said the program started with about 110 students and has now grown to 140.

“The program has been well supported from the administrators to the teachers,” said Alonzo, who served in the Air Force for 20 years, including the Philippines and Alaska.

At 10:30 a.m., about 20 children and adults participated in a one-mile fun run through the parking lot of the school district administrative office, adjacent to Rotary Park. The run was organized by the Maricopa Rotary Club and the local chapter of Chances for Children, which focuses on improving quality of life for school aged children by supporting sports and physical education programs.

Then at 12:30 p.m., community members were treated to a barbecue with hot dogs, chips, drinks and cookies.

Meanwhile, a Veterans Day celebration was held at Legacy Traditional School with a pancake breakfast that started at 9 a.m. Students performed patriot songs and letters to soldiers were read. The keynote speaker was Jim Johnson, pastor of First Baptist Church.

Legacy Traditional School; isn't that the place that tried to cancel the Veteran's Day holiday a couple of years ago? They notified us (parents) that the school calendar was changing, and that there would be school on Veteran's Day, than a week later we were told there would be no school, but there would be a Veteran's Day celebration/pancake breakfast/speaker at the school; hypocrites!
