If you enjoy high school basketball, really enjoy it, Maricopa High School will be the place to be Thursday and Friday for the eighth annual ‘Copa Hoops Holiday Classic.
Eight boys’ teams and five girls’ teams will play a total of 34 games, six for each for the boys and four for the girls, in two gyms at the high school.
Games will be played in the main gym and the multi-purpose room beginning 8 a.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m. Friday.
The Maricopa boys will be looking to re-claim the tournament crown they won three years in a row until the streak was broken last year. The girls have won the last two events.
The boys’ tournament features Ajo, Wellton Antelope, Maricopa, Phoenix North Pointe Prep, San Luis, Chandler Seton Catholic, Tempe and Tonoho O’Odham.
Each will play three games each day with the tournament winner decided by the best won-lost record. A series of tie-breaking rules are in place to determine a champion if more than one team has the top record.
The girls’ event features Tucson Cholla, Glendale, Maricopa, Tucson Pueblo and Tonoho O’Odham. The champion will be determined in the same manner as the boys.
The Maricopa boys enter the tournament with a 4-5 record and will open play at 9:30 a.m. Thursday against North Pointe Prep. The Rams’ girls currently are 3-5 and will host the first game of the event, Thursday at 8 a.m. against Tonoho O’Odham. Both games will be in the main gym.
All game times after the first of each day are approximate.
