Runners of all ages and experience levels are invited to an organizational meeting 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce office, 44870 W. Hathaway Ave., No. 5, to prepare for the half or full Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon June 3 in San Diego.

Team Maricopa is a running group through the nonprofit Tempe-based Chances for Children, a charity raising money for fitness programs for school-aged children by providing training and guidance to runners.

It costs $100 to join and be coached by experienced marathon runners. Participants are asked to pledge another $300 to participate in the marathon with most of the money going to the charity. In the past, runners were asked to pledge $1,000.

Two years ago, Team Marciopa provided fitness and nutritional programs and training for about 60 students in the Maricopa Unified School District.

Organizers are hoping to attract at least 35 runners this year.

Thursday’s meeting, said runner and local Team Maricopa fundraising chairwoman Mirisue Galindo, “is so runners know what they’re getting into.”

They will learn about the group and its fundraising efforts, as well as discuss their individual training plans and schedules to get ready for either the half or full marathon.
