Tuesday is the last day for Maricopa high school students to apply for a city internship.
The program is open to juniors and seniors. Internships are available in the finance, community services, city clerk, city manager and development services offices.
Emelie Nevius, a Maricopa High School junior, said she hoped to work in the parks and recreation department, but “the city clerk and marketing picked me. I actually loved it.”
Emelie interned last semester and said she is applying again.
“I loved working up front and meeting people. I just loved any part of my job,” she said.
Emelie said she had been looking for a job, but was having trouble because she didn’t have any work experience. Then a friend of her parents told her about the city internship program.
Students can apply every semester until they are 18, she said.
“I already have a friend applying. It’s a great experience; I’m telling everyone about it,” Emelie said.
Taylor Nun, a MHS senior, said she worked in the library November through January doing a little bit of everything.“There was always something exciting happening behind the scenes,” Taylor said. She still remembers the cockroach creeping out of an audio book.
Taylor said she worked with “incredibly wonderful” people and recommends the program.
“It’s great to give work experience, especially to juniors and seniors,” she said. Taylor, who said she loves to read so the library was a good fit for her, hasn’t decided which college she’s going to, but she plans to major in history.
The city takes up to five students for 10 weeks. They work 10 to 20 hours a week, earning $7.35 an hour.
