Book sale, family night to raise money for Media Club

Parents, teens and their siblings can rock out this Thursday at Maricopa High School. The opportunity comes as part of the weeklong book sale at the high school, kicking off Feb. 9 and running through Feb. 16.

Books, bookmarks and other items are available for students to purchase throughout the event, but the real treat comes Thursday night when the event is open to the rest of the community. On Thursday, Feb. 11, the public is invited to purchase books or even take part in a game of Rock Band.

Money raised from the book sale will go to benefit the Media Club, which typically uses the funds to buy new materials for the library or to pay to bring in authors for autographs and speaking engagements.

However, this year’s event also comes with a twist. June Celaya, Maricopa High’s principal, has pledged to dress up as a rock star for the day if the sale breaks the previous sales record of $1,850 by 10 percent.

“The kids are really looking forward to seeing the principal dressed as a rock star,” said school librarian Robin Shoup. “If we raise 15 percent more, maybe we can convince her to dress up as a member from KISS.”
