City hopes to partner with Rocky Point

Maricopa citizens could soon see authentic Rocky Point dancers, musicians and more at upcoming city bashes such as the annual Salsa Festival.

Maricopa Mayor Anthony Smith, along with the president of the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce, Rusty Akers, made a trip south of the border Friday, Jan. 22, to visit with Rocky Point President Alejandro Zepeda and its chamber leaders.

"We spent a day and a half talking about ways our chambers could partner to benefit each other," Smith said. Ideas that came to the table included having bands, dancers and others come to Maricopa's festivals and, in turn, the city would offer up booth space to promote Rocky Point as a Mexico getaway destination.

Other possible partnerships included Rocky Point police officers coming to Maricopa to receive training in specific areas. Smith said Zepeda and his staff were well aware of Maricopa, and many had even been to the city.

"The city of Maricopa has a long history as a gateway to Rocky Point," Smith said. "Our two cities share many of the same problems, interests and opportunities. I'm looking forward to exploring how we can help each other in tourism, public safety and commerce."
