Last night, at approximately 11 p.m., city of Maricopa Police (MPD) officers responded to a panic alarm at the Sonic Restaurant, located in the 21000 block of North John Wayne Parkway.

The initial call was dispatched as an activated panic alarm. Additional information indicated an armed robbery had just occurred at that location.

MPD officers, assisted by the U.S. Marshall’s Service and a Gila River Police Department canine unit, were able to secure the scene and determine that the suspect had fled prior to their arrival.

Witness accounts indicated the suspect entered the restaurant through an unlocked entrance door, approached the employees while brandishing a knife, moved them to the back of the restaurant, demanded money and fled the restaurant on foot with an undetermined amount of money.

None of the witnesses were injured.

The suspect is described as an African-American male, 6-feet to 6 feet 2inches tall, medium build, approximately 18-25 years of age. He was last seen wearing a black and gray hooded jacket, dark blue jeans, black gloves, dark gym shoes and a black ski mask.

The incident is still under investigation, and MPD is requesting that anyone with information contact them at 520-316-6880 or call the Silent Witness Hotline at 520-316-6900.
