If you’re not going to be at the Phoenix (err, FBR) Open, play in Maricopa’s. This Sunday, February 6, a golf tournament and Super Bowl party benefiting Maricopa’s Parks, Recreation and Libraries Department (via the Maricopa Cultural Activity Center) will be held at The Duke Golf Course.

The tournament was conceived by local residents Edward Farrell and JW Salazar. Farrell, a member of Maricopa’s City Council, is planning on this being the first of many such events. “We’re hoping to make it an annual event for years to come,” he said. “Proceeds will go to purchase uniforms, balls and other sports equipment for our youth and to update books in the library.”

Parks and Rec director Martin McDonald added that “part of the proceeds will also be used to purchase supplies for our blossoming arts program as well as dance materials for our ever-popular dance classes.”

The format is a four-person scramble and prizes will be awarded for putting, driving and closest-to-the-pin competitions. The $100 registration fee includes practice balls, golf, gift bag and dinner and drinks at the post-round Super Bowl party. Three big-screen TVs will be brought in for the game. Additional tickets for just the party are available at $25 each.

The tournament is also accepting hole sponsorships and prize donations for a raffle. Farrell indicated that 20 foursomes have already been sold and he hopes to secure five more groups before Friday’s deadline.
