City of Maricopa to adopt Sports Code of Conduct

When the Maricopa City Council meets Tuesday evening, they will be asked to approve a Sports Code of Conduct to ensure “proper behavior at all youth and adult sporting events held within the City of Maricopa Public Parks and Recreational Facilities.”

The code, which has already been approved by the Parks, Recreation and Libraries (PRL) advisory committee, will prohibit unsportsmanlike conduct, including attacking officials and using foul language.

PRL Director Marty McDonald said it is a standard code that most cities in Arizona have adopted. He explained that a couple of incidents came up during the last Little League and adult softball seasons that warranted creating the code of conduct.

Violations of the code include punishments ranging from individuals being ejected from the game in play to being permanently banned from Maricopa parks.

Besides unsportsmanlike conduct, the code of conduct is also designed to protect the parks themselves against vandalism.

Once approved by Council, the code will take effect immediately.
