Council vote may move new city facilities forward

The city of Maricopa Council will meet this Tuesday night to consider approving the funding of Abacus Project Management Inc. to provide construction management and design services for a future city hall complex and a recreational complex.

Abacus was originally hired Sept. 7, 2010 for $521,207 to complete the design standards manual for five city projects: city hall complex, regional sports complex, aquatics/multigenerational center, main library and public works yard.

Now, to expedite completing the city hall and recreation center, city staff is recommending the firm also be paid an additional $2.15 million to complete two new task orders.

The first task order, at a cost of $1.8 million, is for the city hall complex and is broken into two phases. The first phase is an extension of services the city already paid for and will result in the completion of a design standards manual and site plan for the project.

These documents will call for extensive input from the public and other stakeholders so as to determine included features in the complex.

The second phase is the building design for the actual construction of the city hall complex.

The second task order, at a cost of $345,000, will result in the production of a master site plan and engineering plan for the regional park/multigenerational center/aquatics center.

These two plans will identify the location of building pads, pedestrian walkways, parking and other features.

In addition to the possible hiring of Abacus to complete this additional work, council will also decide whether to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with Casa Grande and Pinal County to do a design concept report for a future roadway.

The city council will discuss these issues in their regular session, which begins at 7 p.m. at the Maricopa Unified School District Office, 44150 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.

Prior to the start of the regular session council will host a study session beginning at 6 p.m.

Topics for discussion in the study session include the city’s strategic plan, which identifies council’s goals and vision for the city, and a possible fireworks ordinance.
