Learn to line dance, indulge in BBQ and play family-friendly games at the Family Hoedown, a new fund-raiser from DSPA Gems scheduled for Saturday at Elements.

Swing your partner, Maricopa.

A Family Hoedown will countrify the Elements Event Center Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.

This is a new event for DSPA Gems, Inc.

DSPA Gems Treasurer Christine Nechvatal said the community is invited, and don’t worry about your dancing skills.

“We’ll be teaching some line-dancing for everyone,” she said. “We’ll have a live DJ and some country-style games for the whole family. It’s going to be fun.”

DSPA dancers will also perform during the evening.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for children under age 10. That price includes the barbecue meal created by the Elements staff.

Nechvatal said DSPA Gems’ other popular events include the Sugar-Plum Tea in December and the Daddy-Daughter Dance in February. A Mother-Son Dance is planned this spring as well.

The fund-raisers provide tuition to performing arts classes for low-income participants.

“We’ve awarded over $20,000 to 39 students so far,” Nechvatal said.

Besides its variety of dance classes on its regular schedule, DSPA also offers Inspire for special-needs children and periodic dance instruction for students in elementary schools in the Maricopa Unified School District.
