The pedestrian killed around 4 a.m. after being struck by a motorist was Jordan Guardo-Mickell of Maricopa.

Maricopa police spokesman Sgt. Hal Koozer said Guardo-Mickell, 23, was walking in the roadway on Smith-Enke Road between Province Parkway and Desert Garden Drive when he was hit by a motorist traveling eastbound on Smith-Enke.

“The gal was coming home from work this morning,” Koozer said. “The subject was walking in the roadway, wearing dark clothing. There was no sign of impairment on the part of the driver. The Office of the Medical Examiner will determine if the victim was impaired.”

Koozer said the driver is cooperating with police.

Koozer urged anyone walking or running along a busy roadway like Smith-Enke Road to use caution.

“It’s the things we’ve all heard for years – use the sidewalks, cross at intersections and check both ways. If you will be walking or running in the morning before there is much light, wear reflective clothing or run on the sidewalk. We often see people running in the bike lane. All it takes is a second of distraction for someone to drift into that lane, so we urge people to be very cautious.”
