Maricopa Fire Department is investigating a fire at the First Baptist Church of Maricopa. The blaze was reported around 9 a.m.

The fire apparently started inside the church and created a lot of smoke. The church is at 18705 N. John Wayne Parkway.

The church is more than 60 years old and underwent a remodel a couple of years ago. At one time, it was in the path of the future State Route 347 overpass. The new design of that grade separation, however, avoids the historic church.

The cause and damage estimate of the fire are pending.
