Goddard elected school board president

At Wednesday’s meeting the Maricopa Unified School District’s governing board elected a new face as its president for the next 12 months.

The board elected Geoff Goddard by a vote of three in favor (Tim White, Geoff Goddard and Lori Glenn), one against (Tracy Davis) and one abstention. (Carrie Vargas).

“I am both shocked and honored at my appointment to this position. It is something I was not prepared for, and something I was truly not expecting,” Goddard said.

White nominated Goddard for the position after a motion made by Goddard to nominate White as president failed by a 2-3 vote with White and Goddard the only members voting for the motion.

Following his election, Goddard asked the board to provide guidance for him in his new position because he was not quite yet aware of how to run one of the board meetings.

Board member Davis said,” Geoff, you will have all of our support and be able to fall back on the training you received from the Arizona School Board Association.”

The board also elected Davis vice president by a vote of three in favor (Davis, Glenn and Vargas), one against (White) and one abstention (Goddard).

White was elected temporary president and will fill in as president if Davis and Goddard are both absent from the same meeting.

“I wish to congratulate the new board and look forward to working with them this year,” said Superintendent John Flores.
