Maricopa Market Makes Debut

Maricopa has its very first open-air market. It opened on Saturday, October 9th, in the parking lot of the Maricopa Unified School District’s District Office. Crafts, canned goods, produce, homespun knitted items, tamales, knife sharpening, quilts, baskets, cacti, plants and jewelry were all available to residents of this community.

Hidden valley residents Sheri Doramus and Denise Diedrich of Rainbow Valley Nursery have been organizing the event for the past six months and received City Council approval the first week of September. “We asked some of the oldtimers when the last open-air market was held. They couldn’t remember that there ever was one. This is for the community. We hope they’ll come out and support us,” expressed Ms. Doramus.

Although the crowd was light on the first day, due in part to competing events, Ms. Diedrich was pleased. “You’ve got to start somewhere,” she said. The Maricopa Market will run on the second and fourth Saturday of each month until April 23, 2005 (with the exception of Christmas Day which is a Saturday this year). It is not a flea market. It offers agricultural products, processed foods, crafts, and is available for organizations to sell their fund-raising products. Vendor information is available by calling Denise at (520)424-3464 or by email at [email protected].
