Maricopa High School students and alumnae will be celebrating Homecoming this week with various activities, culminating in the Maricopa vs. Florence football game Friday night.

Sunday, Oct. 14:
Maricopa residents and their families are invited to attend a candlelit Domestic Violence Vigil at 4:30 p.m. at the Global Water facility. Mayor Anderson will read a proclamation followed by guest speakers, including domestic violence survivors. Resource materials will be available from related groups and associations.

Monday, Oct. 15:
The city’s Public Safety Advisory Committee meets at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. The motorized scooter ordinance will be discussed.

Maricopa residents or their families affected by multiple sclerosis can meet for self help and support at the First Baptist Church of Maricopa, just south of the tracks on John Wayne Parkway, from 4 – 6 p.m. Guest speaker will be Physical Therapist Lisa Akers. Tuesday, Oct.16:
Maricopa City Council meets at the Global Water facility for a work session at 6 p.m. followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m.

The Friends of the Maricopa Community Library’s weekly Coffee on the Porch begins this morning at the library.

New Life Pregnancy Center offers free parenting classes on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., during their regular weekly office hours. To schedule an appointment, call (520) 568-0612. Lessons cover prenatal care through the teen years.

Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 19235 W. Gunsmoke Road every Tuesday from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 17:
The Homecoming parade, beginning at Maricopa Wells Middle School and ending at the high school football stadium, begins at 6 p.m. The spirit bonfire will be lit at 7 p.m. with festivities ending promptly at 8 p.m.

The La Leche League breast-feeding support group meets every third Wednesday of each month at the Villages clubhouse from 10 – 11:30 a.m. For more information, contact Kristin via email.

Thursday, Oct. 18:
A carnival will be held at Maricopa High School from 6 – 8 p.m. as part of the Homecoming festivities. The event will feature a haunted house, dunk tank, car smashing, piñatas, a cake walk, rock wall, pie eating contest, bouncer, pie throwing contest, food and much more.

The M.A.S.H. Anti-Substance Abuse Coalition will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Montezuma Room at City Hall. Anyone interested in substance abuse prevention is invited to attend.

Friday, Oct. 19:
The Maricopa Rams varsity football team plays their Homecoming game against Florence High School at 7 p.m. The Football Booster Club will hold a tailgate party at 5 p.m. prior to the game, and halftime will feature the crowning of this year’s Homecoming royalty.

Saturday, Oct. 20:
Maricopa High School students will dance the night away at their Homecoming Dance from 7 – 11 p.m.

Friends of the Maricopa Community Library will hold their semi-annual book sale at Santa Rosa Elementary School from 8 a.m. until noon. All books, with the exception of children’s books and audio-visual materials, are $5 per bag. Home Cookin’ from Maricopa, Arizona ($10) and Patricia Brock’s Reflections of a Desert Town ($25) will also be available. Donated books or materials may be dropped off at the school 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19. Proceeds of the sale go to the library and its programs.

The Maricopa Rotary Club’s Cotton Pickin’ Barn Dance will be held at Sonny Dunn’s barn from 7 p.m. until midnight. Tickets, which include dinner, are $50 per person and can be purchased from any Rotarian. For further information, call (520) 568-9439.
