Maricopa Wells Middle School drama students took a flight to the second star to the right in a production of “Peter Pan” last weekend.

Directed by drama teacher and drama club sponsor Zack Irvine, the cast of 24 brought the classic tale of swashbuckling adventure on the Jolly Roger, family values and the jealousy of Tinker Bell to life on the school’s multipurpose room stage Thursday and Friday evening and during a Saturday matinee.

Cast members auditioned for their roles in August, began learning their lines and doing stage blocking in October and practiced their dancing in November.

The drama club began in 2007 when Irvine came to MUSD. The first play was “Our Town.” Each fall and spring another club production is presented, with the next one scheduled for April 2011.

One cast member, Paige Lopez, joined the drama club as a sixth grader and, as an eighth grader this year, played Wendy in “Peter Pan.”

Irvine thanked the community and parents for their support of the drama club’s efforts.

“The ‘Peter Pan’ cast was amazing,” said Irvine. “They worked so hard to put on this production, and it was great to see them come together.”
