Maricopa High School freshmen met Thursday for orientation led by upperclassmen in an effort to introduce the newcomers to campus.

The largest freshman class in Maricopa High School history is nearly 700 ninth graders, an increase of almost 40 percent from last year, school officials said.

Registrar Diane Shelton said ninth grade is not the only class seeing growth; the entire school is experiencing an enrollment boom.

“We currently have 2,184 students enrolled,” Shelton said. “We are probably going to be at 2,200 (by the start of school), and that is capacity.”

Classes at MHS begin Aug. 7.
