MHS wins CAC math competition

On April 9, 95 Maricopa High School students competed in the Central Arizona College Mathematics Competition.

MHS won the overall championship.

Twenty-three students advanced to the individual competition by scoring highest on a seven question qualifying round. Four of those students placed in the top 15 of the double-elimination, individual competition. During the individual competition, MHS students cheered on their teammates with chants of “Copa! Copa!” after each correct answer.

Brychelle Jackson placed second overall and Nicole Carpenter placed fifth in the individual competition.

***ADVERTISEMENT***MHS also did well in the team round. Kyle Salazar and Torrent Fishbach won first place in the level three team competition (Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Statistics). Rylie Gosiak and Sarah Ledbetter won second place in the level two team competition (Geometry and Algebra 2).

Math teachers Lorana Ellard, Grant Hanks, Jerri Early and Morgan Dalton accompanied the students to the competition.

"We are extremely proud of how hard the students worked," Ellard said. "They represented MHS with pride."
