NASCAR’s Robby Gordon to Deliver Meals

NASCAR driver Robby Gordon is accustomed to delivering on the racetrack. On November 11, Gordon will be making a “special delivery” in Maricopa.

Gordon will take part in a 10 a.m. ceremony at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Resort, as the casino donates a $40,000, 2004 Chevy Silverado food delivery van to be used for the Meals on Wheels program through the Pinal-Gila Area Agency on Aging. Immediately following the vehicle presentation, NASCAR driver Robby Gordon will personally deliver meals to two homebound seniors in Maricopa.

“Working with Harrah’s is a great opportunity to meet thousands of people who share my passion for racing while serving an important cause,” Gordon said. “I’m looking forward to sharing the NASCAR experience with fans throughout the country and taking part in an initiative that benefits seniors greatly.”

“We’re thrilled to have Robby at Harrah’s to help us launch the area’s Meals on Wheels program,” said Tom Cook, Harrah’s Phoenix Ak-Chin Casino’s Senior Vice President and General Manager. “Robby, along with Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino’s staff and the H.E.R.O. committee, is getting involved in giving back to the community through this worthwhile cause.”

“Having such a high profile celebrity like Gordon participating in our Meals on Wheels program brings much needed attention to both the program and the residents it serves,” said Olivia Guerrero, Executive Director Pinal-Gila Area Agency on Aging Council for Senior Citizens – Region V.

According to Meals on Wheels Association of America, more than 13% of Americans are older than 65 and that number is projected to jump to 20% by 2030. The organization reports its services are already stretched as four out of every 10 Meals On Wheels programs have waiting lists for seniors in need of meals. While some funding for the local meal programs comes from government sources, the programs rely extensively on private donations and contributions in order to meet their budgetary needs.
