A 3-year-old boy was pronounced dead last night after he fell out of a Ford Explorer driven by his mother.

Quincy Tyress Chapman-Gray died from serious head injuries after he was transported to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix.

His mother, Angelic Elizabeth Nikkol Chapman, 36, has not been charged in the boy’s death.

At about 5:30 p.m., Maricopa police and fire units responded to an incident south of Rancho Mirage and Anthony boulevards involving a 3-year-old boy who fell out of a passenger-side window of a moving vehicle, according to a statement from the city.

Two older siblings were also in the back seat, and none of the children was wearing seatbelts.

At a press conference this afternoon attended by both local and Phoenix media, Police Chief Patrick Melvin said the case is under investigation. In response to a reporter’s question, he said there was no indication the mother was impaired.

“A mother and an entire community are grieving right now,” Melvin said.

He thanked those who had assisted police by calling 911.

City spokesperson LaTricia Woods said a copy of the police report on the incident would not be available until after the investigation is complete.
