Saturday’s attic fire at First Baptist Church of Maricopa did more than disrupt religious services. It has now also forced a change in voting sites for Tuesday’s Primary Election.

According to Pinal County Elections Director Michele Forney, Maricopa voters in Precinct 100 will use Maricopa Wells Middle School gym as their new polling place. The school is also the polling place for Precinct 101. It is at 45725 W. Honeycutt Ave.

Pastor Jim Johnson, who was out of state at the time, said no one was in the church when the fire started. Maricopa Fire Department estimated the start of the fire at 8:30 a.m. By the time crews arrived, smoke had filled the building.

The fire was contained to a room and the attic directly above the altar. Fire crews from Gila River, Sun Lakes and Phoenix also responded.

There were no reported injuries.
