Coming off its third victory of the season, the Maricopa High football team will go for its second straight win on Friday evening when it hosts Fountain Hills High at 7 p.m.

Maricopa went to 3-2 last weekend with a come-from-behind 28-21 victory over Empire High.

Maricopa senior running back Matt Fierros rushed for 260 yards on the night, making it his third game surpassing 200 rushing yards this season.

“I hope that win (Empire game) will focus the team on execution,” Maricopa High head coach Tyler Brandt commented. “We did not do a good job on either side of the ball with consistency in execution.”

Fountain Hills enters the contest with a record of 1-4, having dropped its most recent game to Santa Cruz Valley by a 44-13 score. Fountain Hills’ lone win this season was a 33-7 triumph at Safford.

In last weekend’s lost to Santa Cruz Valley, Jason Fairfield and Jim Hubick scored TD’s for Fountain Hills, with Jeremy Baker carrying 16 times for 77 yards.

“They (Fountain Hills) are very big up front and do a great job of blocking,” Brandt continued. “We will have to be very disciplined defensively with our responsibilities. Offensively we just need to continue to improve on what we do. Our scheme is sound; we just need to execute.”

The Rams, who are playing their second straight home game, hit the road next weekend to play Safford (Oct. 5).

Maricopa will finish up October with home dates against Santa Cruz (Oct. 12) and Florence (Oct. 19), then visit Globe on Oct. 26.
