School board to consider buying middle school site

The Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board on Wednesday will consider buying two school buses and a new site for a middle school in addition to approving the installation of lockers at Maricopa High School.

The bi-weekly meeting will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Room 1 at Maricopa High School, 45012 Honeycutt Ave.

Shannon Johns, an outgoing member of the school board whose resignation last month will take effect in late May, said the rescission of the proposed middle school site in the Lakes will likely be the most-discussed item on the agenda.

The Lakes property is adjacent to high-voltage power lines near the Global Water Resources Facility in Rancho El Dorado. Numerous public meetings have offered information to parents and school employees and officials regarding possible related health risks (see “MUSD forum to focus on Lakes school site”).

“With this whole walkout thing that happened today, it should be a talking point,” Johns said on Tuesday, referring to a peaceful protest in which MHS students had threatened to leave campus in support of a classmate they felt was wrongly disciplined (see “District official downplays demonstration as peaceful”).

The matter won’t be on the agenda, but Johns said he suspects someone will bring it up for discussion.

The Board will also consider requests to allow the Future Farmers of America club to travel to Tucson to in June to attend a leadership conference at the University of Arizona. Students will each pay $50 and the FFA club will chip in the remaining $50 to cover expenses, the board agenda states.

In May, Mariopa Wells Middle School students would like to attend a leadership retreat in Prescott, and are similarly asking the Board for approval to make the trip. The agenda states that all costs will be paid through Title IV Grant funds.
