An unknown number of people with “severe injuries” were transported by air and ground to Chandler Regional Hospital after an accident on State Route 347 near Riggs Road Wednesday afternoon, according to the Department of Public Safety.

DPS spokesman Bart Graves said the accident occurred on southbound 347 at 1:18 p.m. He confirmed there has been at least one fatality.

“Both southbound lanes are closed,” Graves said. “The most seriously injured were flown to Chandler Regional Hospital.”

It is unclear how many vehicles were involved, but developing reports from law enforcement agencies indicate there may have been up to three.

Motorist Brian Ledding said he witnessed the accident.  Ledding said a vehicle was heading southbound on SR 347 when it collided with a car that was stopped at a red light at the Riggs intersection.

“Everyone is going through the median to get around it,” Ledding said.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
