Southern Dunes hosts Gateway Golf Tour event

Professional golf is coming to Maricopa. The Grey Goose Gateway Tour, one of professional golf’s leading developmental tours, is playing the 7th event of its 2005 Pacific Series schedule at Southern Dunes Golf Club, a private golf club in Maricopa.

“The Gateway Tour is one of the top proving grounds for aspiring tour professionals in the country,” according to Garrett Wallace, general manager of Southern Dunes. “We are very excited to see how our layout will challenge some of the best young players in golf.”

Tournament play is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The field of 120 players will be cut after 36 holes in advance of Thursday’s final round.

Among the players competing will be the leading money winner of last year’s Grey Goose Tour season, Jerry Smith. Smith earned $161, 026 in 2004, winning three Tour events and posting eight Top 5s in 14 events. Smith also plays on the Nationwide Tour where is currently 14th on the money list after finishing in a tie for 3rd at the recent New Zealand PGA Championship.

“Southern Dunes is a terrific golf course,” Smith said. “I’m looking forward to playing it under tournament conditions, catching up with some friends in Maricopa, and hopefully coming away with a win.”
