The Maricopa Turkey Trot is a fun run/walk early Thanksgiving morning at Pacana Park.

Maricopans can lessen their Thanksgiving dinner guilt this year by getting some exercise that morning during the 10th annual Maricopa Turkey Trot.

The 5K/1-mile fun run takes place Nov. 23 at Pacana Park at 8 a.m. Pre-registration begins on site at 7.

Participants can also register online here until Nov. 22 at 10 p.m.

The event also benefits a good cause.

Organizer Jennifer Mix said as always, the only fee is a donation of non-perishable food items to benefit F.O.R. Maricopa Food Bank. The food bank re-opened inside a temporary space at Santa Cruz Elementary Nov. 13.

“What’s been really great is that young men that are interested in becoming Eagle Scouts have started to approach us each year and ask to help because it’s such a great cause,” Mix said.

This year Eagle Scout candidate Jarom Hoopes has assisted Mix with the event by publicizing it and recruiting local sponsors for the race.

After a decade, Mix said she is happy the community is still supporting the trot.

“It’s crazy, I can’t believe we are still doing this ten years later,” Mix said.

Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is one of the trips scheduled by M.O.R.E.E. this fall.

Maricopa Outdoor Recreation and Environmental Education (M.O.R.E.E.), a program provided by Copper Sky Recreational Center, has a full slate of activities set to go this fall. All trips leave from and return to Copper Sky. All participants must be at least 18 years old, and fees vary.

Highlights

Cibecue Falls

A sweet hike and overnight camping are features of this trip to the Fort Apache Reservation, and hiking permits are issued through White Mountain Apache. The hike is a walk up a canyon along Cibecue Creek to the beautiful falls, which are 30 feet high. Be prepared for your feet to get wet and for climbing on boulders.

The trip is Sept. 15-16.

Canyon Lake Dolly Steamboat

This is a 10-hour daytrip to Tortilla Flat in the Superstition Mountains. Created by a dam on the Salt River, the lake has many boating opportunities. The steamboat ride allows for wonderful wildlife viewing and relaxing atmosphere.

The trip is Sept. 26.

Fossil Creek

An overnight backpacking trip to one of the most popular outdoor spots in central Arizona includes an eight-mile hike. The area is federally-designated as “Wild and Scenic” river with spectacular travertine pools and a waterfall. It was once home to Childs Power Plant, but the creek has since been restored.

The trip is Oct. 21-22.

Family Camping

Camp out while staying home. Copper Sky invites the community to spend the night in tents at the park and enjoy family entertainment like a movie, scavenger hunt and, of course, S’mores.

The event is Nov. 3-4.

Tonto Natural Bridge State Park

A daytrip to the Payson area includes hiking of an hour or less (though they can be strenuous), a waterfall, pine trees, lots of wildlife, possibly the largest travertine bridge in the world, an observation deck and a historic lodge.

The trip is Nov. 7.

Desert Botanical Garden

A relaxing daytrip to Phoenix is both educational and beautiful. Besides the garden tour, there is a sculpture exhibit planned. Learn about desert plants and how to care for them, as well as birds and wildflowers.

The Beer Garden at Maricopa's Fourth of July event was a small, restricted area. Photo by Raquel Hendrickson

By R. Mason Callejas

The Maricopa City Council is considering an expansion of allocated space for beer sales and consumption at city festivals after hearing a proposal during their work session on Sept. 20.

Special Events Manager Niesha Whitman presented arguments for a larger beer garden during city sponsored festivals at Copper Sky Regional Park. The city has a contract with the local restaurant Native Grill & Wings to serve beer at the events. Though the company doesn’t always turn a profit on their investment in the events, the city still receives 25 percent of overall sales.

Whitman suggested that by allowing a larger area to mingle and roam, event goers will be more likely to partake in the libations, thus increasing the city’s cash take from these events.

“This [the expansion] could potentially increase revenue for the city,” Whitman said, “because we will have increased alcohol sales.”

Expanding the beer garden, however, would require an initial investment from the city. The city would need to purchase 3,000 linear feet of fencing at a cost of $20,565.68 to comply with an ordinance that prohibits “public” consumption of alcohol. By fencing off the events, the city is also able to tally a more accurate headcount for attendance at the events.

A more modest proposal of only 2,100 linear feet of fence was also made. However, exact cost was not discussed. Councilmembers Vincent Manfredi and Nancy Smith supported the smaller proposition which, though still much larger than the previous beer garden, would allow for more “family friendly” space at the festivals.

According to Whitman’s presentation, renting the fence would cost the city about $3,500 per event, thus with more than four events a year the fence would theoretically pay for itself after only two years of use. The temporary fence also has the added benefit of being used for any number of other city events in Copper Sky or elsewhere.

Possible $1 beer garden entry fees were discussed along with the idea of drink tickets.

Though nothing was approved the idea of the expansion seemed to garner unanimous support and is likely to move forward.
