Will Dunn’s “horrible” and “amazing” road trip to Louisiana life-altering for all involved

Nike chairman Phil Knight would be proud. Maricopa City Councilman Will Dunn “just did it.”

Provoked merely by a phone call from a friend Pastor Art Tidwell of Scottsdale First Dream Center Church, Dunn and Tidwell spontaneously packed a 15-passenger van with supplies and road tripped to the New Orleans area to assist Hurricane Katrina evacuees. In addition to delivering supplies, goodwill and hope, they brought back a displaced family.

Councilman Dunn (far left) and Pastor Tidwell (far right) returned to Maricopa with four evacuees Thursday.

When asked what single moment impacted him most, Dunn said “The destruction of the south side of the City of Gulf Port with it being hard to differentiate between the row of houses and what should have been an empty street but instead was piled as high as the destroyed houses with trees, cars, and demolished houses.

“Or was it the joy and amazement when we gave the Red Cross nurse the adult diapers for her sick patient?

“Or was it when I heard Troy’s full story and realized that God allowed me to be a part of His plan to radically change Troy’s life?

“Or was it finding out that when I was in the midst of the destruction, my city of Maricopa was already in full gear welcoming in evacuees that were already arriving.

“Or was it seeing one more time the abundance of compassion and resourcefulness that my wife has by being three steps ahead of everyone else?”

Dunn labeled the adventure “a horrible trip and an amazing trip at the same time.”
