Maricopa police are investigating a string of vehicle burglaries that took place on a single street in the Sorrento neighborhood Friday.

Department spokesman Ricky Alvarado said residents on the 37000 block of Leonessa Avenue reported hearing noises outside their homes between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. The first burglary wasn’t reported until 10:15 a.m. Other incidents were reported later Friday afternoon and evening.

Alvarado said five vehicles were reported burglarized. He did not have information about what was taken, but said the incidents involved unlocked vehicles.

Police are investigating the burglaries and will be stepping up patrols in the area, he said.

The department has tried to combat crimes of opportunity by taking a proactive approach – reminding residents to lock their doors, roll up their windows and never leave valuables within their vehicles.
