Originally from North Pole, Alaska, he probably has heard way too many jokes about knowing Santa Claus, Rudolph and the elves. Elijah Armstead now calls Maricopa home and has since 2004. He lives here with his mother, Elizabeth, and a younger sister, Elyshia. His older sister attends the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.
Elijah is the newest member of the inmaricopa.com team. As the high school correspondent, he will be keeping his eyes and ears on sports, extracurricular events and all the latest news on the Rams’ campus.
Elijah Armstead is inmaricopa.com’s new Maricopa High School correspondent.
Asked about the move from Alaska to Arizona, Elijah replied, “The biggest challenge I faced in the big move was adapting to the extreme heat and the lack of my beloved snow. I accept that Maricopa is my home, and that it has a very bright future for me.”
A tenth grader at Maricopa High School, Armstead belongs to the Maricopa Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter and has a District Green Hand degree. He received a varsity letter in golf last season and played on the basketball team. A member of the United States Golf Association and the Maricopa High School Academic Decathlon team, he is an honor roll student. Last year he won an Academic Symposium Award at Central Arizona College.
Armstead’s hobbies are basketball, golf, playing the guitar, hunting, fishing and boxing. In fact, he cites his parents and Mohammed Ali as his role models. Ali is a good role model for a young man who is the undefeated Golden Gloves champ in the super lightweight division.
In junior high Armstead was a member of the youth division of the Midnight Sun Lions Club of Fairbanks, Alaska. The group, called L.E.O.s (Leadership Education Opportunities), raised funds, lobbied politicians and gained community support to build their “dream” skateboard park.
Elijah intends to earn a bachelor’s degree at some point in the future. He also has a plan to succeed. “I am going to stay disciplined, determined and work hard in every aspect of my life,” he explained.
