Maricopa junior Hunter Taylor is the heavyweight champ of Division II Section III.

Maricopa finished third in the Division II Section III state qualifying tournament at Betty Fairfax High School on Saturday. Nine Rams qualified for state competition.

“We did the best we have ever done since I started coaching,” Erick Fierro said. “I am very proud of what our athletes have accomplished this year.”

Maricopa was 2.5 points out of second place. Two boys and one girl won their respective section titles.

Zachary Kondravy won in the 152-pound weight class, and Hunter Taylor won the section’s heavyweight championship. Ryleigh Westerfield won at 185.

Cody Long took second place at 160. Third place went to Gabriel Garcia at 113 and Angelo Romero at 120. In fourth place, also qualifying for state, were Xavier Rose at 106, Nicolas Mooney at 170 and Quintone Green at 220.

The Division II state championships are Thursday and Friday at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, with medal rounds starting at 7 p.m. Friday.
