Lee Shappell

Editorial Director

Lee became a journalist because he didn’t become a rocket scientist. It’s true! He exhausted the math courses by his junior year in high school and intended to be an aerospace engineer. As a senior, needing a class to be eligible for sports, he took Student Newspaper on an English teacher’s recommendation – and he was hooked. Lee studied journalism at the University of Arizona. During his four-decade career at The Arizona Republic, he covered the Suns, Cardinals and Olympics. He has been a copy-desk chief, managing editor and executive editor at Valley news outlets. Community journalism is his passion, yet he acknowledges: When his son was a Cub Scout, Lee helped him build his rocket.
