Blizzard brings books and penguins to Pima Butte Elementary School

Oh, it’s cold inside at Pima Butte Elementary School. It’s so cold that a whole colony of penguins has taken up residence in the school’s library during the Book Fair Blizzard.

The book fair, which will run until Friday, features a multitude of books, games, puzzles and projects from Scholastic Books, Inc. The proceeds of all sales go to purchasing new books and materials for the school library.

Librarian Lynnette Bingham and her volunteer assistant, Luci Tuerr (who is Bingham’s sister) got Pima Butte students involved in the book fair. “They take more pride and ownership in it when they participate,” said Bingham.

Second and third graders made all the penguins displayed throughout the library, some clustered around their very own life-size igloo.

Snowflakes, made by fourth and fifth graders, dot the walls; some hang from the ceiling. “We gave them a brief lesson on snowflake cutting and making,” laughed Bingham. Students read the story of ‘Snowflake’ Bentley, who through his photos and drawings in the 1860s, determined that no two snowflakes are alike.

The Book Fair Blizzard will be open the rest of this week from 8:15 -11:15 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Wednesday will be Family Night from 4 – 7:30 p.m.

The book fair is an opportunity to purchase books and materials for a worthy cause. It’s also the chance to see a whole colony of penguins ‘north’ of the Equator; their message: “Chill out with a good book!”
