A two-year-old boy drowned Sunday during a family gathering in the back yard of a Desert Cedars home, according to police.

Police said the toddler was allegedly left unattended in a flotation device in the pool with other children around at a home in the 44000 block of West Windrose Drive, but the device flipped over.

Maricopa police and fire units responded to the July 4 call. Maricopa Police Department spokesman Hal Koozer said the case remains under investigation.

Koozer said the police and fire departments “encourage all who have pools to be vigilant when children are around water.”

The two departments are planning to hold a water safety day in the near future, Koozer said.
