Boys soccer unable to stop Wickenburg

The Maricopa High boys soccer team was unable to stop Wickenburg’s offense or overcome the Wranglers’ stingy defense in a 4-1 season-opening loss yesterday.

“There was just an overall breakdown,” coach Jack Berg said.

The Wranglers attacked early, scoring its first goal just two minutes into the game. Maricopa made several attempts to tie the score but were held by the Wickenburg defense. The Rams defense was not able to do the same and allowed two more Wrangler goals before halftime.

In the second half, the teams battled back and forth for more than 20 minutes before Maricopa scored its lone goal of the game. Wickenburg countered, however, scoring with two minutes left for the final 4-1 margin.

“We have great, skilled players,” Berg said. We just have to bring it together as a team.”

Berg said the team will work on “lots of defense” before their next game Thursday at Antelope at 6 p.m.
