The Maricopa Public Safety Advisory Committee got its first ever proposed ordinance passed at last week’s city council meeting.

The council unanimously passed the motorized play vehicle ordinance that was crafted by the Public Safety Advisory Committee.

This new ordinance gives the city the power to regulate the use and safety of motorized play vehicles.

“This doesn’t ban these vehicles, but it sets some standards that take into account the considerations of neighbors and safety,” said Maricopa Mayor Anthony Smith.

Under the new ordinance motorized play vehicles are only allowed on public roads that have a speed limit of less than 35 mph or on private property.

“We don’t want to limit people’s ability to use their vehicles on their own property,” said Council member Carl Diedrich.

In addition to limiting where these vehicles can be used, the ordinance also sets standards on who can use these types of vehicles, safety standards for operating the vehicles and puts regulations on modifying these vehicles.

The new ordinance also requires that businesses in Maricopa that sell motorized play vehicles post the new ordinance in their place of business.

“For those considering these types of vehicles as a gift, having the ordinance posted will educate them on the legal uses,” Smith said.
