Maricopa leaders honored two local U.S. Army soldiers for their service during Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Recently retired 1st Sgt. Keith Brown and Afghanistan veteran Pvt. 1st Class Coral Heazlit were recognized before a packed council room at the Maricopa Unified School District offices.

Brown, a five-year resident of Maricopa, retired in January after serving almost 30 years in the Army. Heazlit, a 2011 Maricopa High School graduate, returned from Afghanistan last week after a nine-month deployment.

The city’s Operation Welcome Home program recognizes military men and women for their service.
