City issues more non-residential than residential building permits for first time ever

For the first time ever the number of non-residential building permits issued in the city of Maricopa has outpaced the number of single-family residence permits issued for a single month.

In November the city of Maricopa issued eight single-family residence building permits and nine non-residential building permits.

The number of residential building permits is down from the 25 the city issued the previous month and 119 fewer than the city issued in the same month last year.

A large chunk of the city’s budget is predicated on the sales and construction of new homes. Early last month the city made several budget cuts to deal with the slowdown in housing activity.

Originally the city projected their budget on a predicted average of 100 permits issued a month. Once the cuts were made, that projected number was lowered to 50 per month.

The city has issued more than 50 permits in a month twice during the past five months and averaged 44.8 permits during that time span. Historically speaking, the next three months tend to be the slowest in terms of building permit issuance.
