Maricopa Police Steve Stahl will review crime statistics and discuss the Get Acquainted in your Neighborhood program 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday during his monthly Coffee with the Chief.

Stahl will discuss this year and last year’s crime statistics and explain how those numbers have fluctuated, police spokesman Ricky Alvarado said

Then, Stahl will report what the department plans to do to combat particular crimes and take suggestions from the public.

“We’re going to go out there and say, ‘This is what your police department’s doing and has been doing over the past year,’” Alvarado said.

Stahl will share some details about the second annual Get Acquainted in your Neighborhood (GAIN) event tentatively set for Nov. 9.

“This is something to try to encourage everybody to get to know your neighbors so that way you can watch out for each other and ultimately help the police department,” Alvarado said.

The event encourages neighborhoods to shut down the street and host some type of event outside such as a potluck so people can meet each other. Police and fire personnel and city officials will go the different events to thank neighborhoods for hosting them and to show support for individual efforts to mitigate crime, Alvarado said.

He said the inaugural GAIN event last year was successful.

“Of course you always want to build on what you had last year, so we’re looking to expand it,” Alvarado said.

Coffee with the Chief is held the second Saturday of the month. This month it will be at the Maricopa Public Library, 41600 W. Smith-Enke Road. People are invited to bring their own cup of coffee.
