He knows when you’ve been speeding. He knows when you’ve been running red lights. He knows when you aren’t strapping your child into a car seat.

Tim Truett is watching.

As head of the Maricopa Police Department traffic unit, Sgt. Truett said he has a passion for traffic and keeping people safe.

He hopes community members have lots of questions for him to answer during Saturday’s Coffee with the Chief.

“I can always think of something to talk about with traffic because I’m passionate about it,” Truett said.

MPD Police Chief Steve Stahl informally meets with residents the second Saturday of the month at 8 a.m. in the Maricopa Public Library Residents have wanted to know more about the ins and outs of traffic control in Maricopa, said Officer Ricardo Alvarado, police public information officer.

Budget constraints have decreased the number of officers working specifically on traffic from six to two, but Truett said he’s still proud of the numbers. With the aid of patrol officers who help out with traffic, 1,417 traffic stops were made in the first quarter this year compared to 1,962 a year ago. Traffic enforcement is largely funded through DUI grant money.
