Maricopa Police are continuing to investigate a Jan. 14 incident that resulted in gunfire at Copper Sky during a candlelight vigil.

Five juveniles were detained that evening by Maricopa Police as a result of an investigation into gunshots in the parking lot of Copper Sky Park. The incident took place during an annual candlelight vigil and memorial event for Kristopher Mickell, 15, a Maricopa teen who was stabbed to death on Jan. 14, 2020, in Phoenix.

According to MPD spokesman Sgt. Hal Koozer, the city still is pursuing leads.

“We just discussed this case,” Koozer said. “It’s still an active investigation at this time.” He did not clarify whether there were any active leads or charges pending in the investigation.

The initial investigation determined the youths were shooting into the air and not at anyone. MPD is withholding the names of the suspects as all are minors.

In a statement at the time of the incident, MPD said, “There were no injuries reported during this incident. All of the juveniles involved were questioned and then released to their parents but may be facing criminal charges as this case is still under investigation.”
