Last month Maricopa Council member Marquisha Griffin was appointed the Regional Director to the National League of Cities National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials constituency group.

The National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) was created in 1970 to represent the interests of African-American elected officials. NBC-LEO’s objectives include increasing African-American participation on the NLC’s steering and policy committees to ensure that policy and program recommendations reflect African-American concerns and benefit their communities.

Griffin is looking forward to advocating for her constituents in our nation’s capitol. “There is a lot of work to be done, and I am eager to lend my expertise to policies and objectives that I believe are worthwhile,” she stated.

The organization also works independently with its members to inform them on issues affecting the African-American community and helps to devise ways to achieve their community objectives through legislation and direct action. NBC-LEO conducts its annual meetings in conjunction with National League of Cities Congress of Cities and the Congressional City Conference.

“I have always believed that it is important for us [City of Maricopa] to become more engaged at the regional level, and I see this appointment as a start in that direction,” said Griffin. “This opportunity allows me to have another forum to develop strategies, discuss policy issues and programs, and share ideas that contribute to the success of Maricopa residents.”
