County’s long count continues in historic election

The crew at Pinal County Elections Department counted 9,000 more ballots Thursday and expects to count 8,000 of the remaining 32,000 today.

In a post on its Facebook page, the department noted it still has 1,800 provisional ballots tally.

The last count update of the night made little difference in any races except to give Jim Jordan a little more breathing room in his attempt to keep his seat on the Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board. In the past day, his lead over challenger Tracie Armstead-Payton has grown from two votes to 10.

The current count shows Maricopa may be a microcosm of Arizona for Election 2020. In a city where nine out of 10 precincts voted for Republican Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, seven out of 10 went for Democrat Joe Biden this year.

Each precinct total in the presidential race is close but most lean Democrat, unlike the rest of Pinal County.

For the first time, four of the city’s precincts have more registered Democrats than Republicans. In all but one precinct, the “other” (independent voters and members of unrecognized political parties) outnumber those in either of the major parties.

The precinct showing the biggest support for Trump this year is No. 80 (Province), which is made up of Province and The Lakes subdivisions. In the current count, they backed Trump by 52%. Four years ago, the Province precinct supported Trump by 53% over Hillary Clinton.

At the same time, Precinct No. 90 (Senita) has gone for Biden by 55%, the Pennsylvanian’s strongest support in Maricopa. That precinct narrowly supported Trump in 2016.
