The American Foundation for Cardiomyopathy is holding a CPR and first-aid certification fundraiser to purchase two defibrillators for Sequoia Pathway Academy.

Anthony Miller, executive director of the Arizona-based nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about the disease, said cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of death among student athletes.

The foundation is donating $25 of the $35 foundation CPR class registration fee to all who sign-up to attend the April 12 training at Sequoia Pathway, Miller said.

Miller said the foundation will hold another class in May and another in the fall until enough money is raised to purchase two defibrillators– one for the main school building and one for the gym.

“If a kid goes into cardiac arrest and heart shock, a defibrillator will shock the heart into normal rhythm – by then the first responders will arrive,” he said. “Cardiac arrest is the No. 1 (cause of death) in America; we lose about 400,000 people a year to cardiac arrest.”

The Arizona Diamondbacks are donating baseball tickets to everyone who registers for the class, Miller said.

Aurora Munoz, health aide at Sequoia Pathway, said having a defibrillator at the school would provide a community service. The school plans to take the device to all sporting events their students attend in the area.

Sequoia Pathway Academy is a kindergarten-through-12th-grade charter school.
