Curves – Fast, Fun, Friendly Fitness

If you believe that exercise can and should be fun, then Curves is the place for you! Curves is a 30 minute fitness program designed to be completed in at least three sessions per week.

For women who want to exercise in a friendly, air-conditioned facility, Curves provides a commonsense approach to weight loss and fitness – and it takes only 90 minutes each week! Members warm-up, perform cardiovascular and strength training, cool down and stretch. Workouts are completed utilizing easy-to-learn hydraulic resistance machines so there are no weights to stack or manage.

When Maricopa’s Curves opened on July 26, 2004 in the Maricopa Fiesta Shopping Center, owner Melissa Kunz, who is also a real estate agent for Russ Lyon in Ahwatukee, anticipated 30 members during the first month. “We had 150 members in the first two weeks, so we are 400% ahead of our anticipated membership goal,” stated Ms. Kunz. “We are thrilled and excited about the service we are providing for the women of Maricopa.”

12Curves began in Texas in 1992 when the first facility was opened by founders Gary and Diane Heavin who built on the concept of providing women with a program of strength training and weight-loss guidance in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. Immediately successful, the Heavins franchised the concept in 1995. Curves reached 1,000 locations within 36 months and 6,000 locations in just eight years.

Today there are 8,000 Curves locations worldwide

in the United States, Canada, Europe and Mexico. One million women are achieving their fitness goals as members. The program produces lasting results due to resistance training which protects muscle and increases metabolism while the body burns fat. Curves also offers nutritional guidance.

The local Curves is a franchise which “stretches south to Casa Grande,” according to Ms. Kunz. Membership includes a one-time service fee and a monthly charge of either $29 (check draft) or $39 (individual monthly payment). The facility itself is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. It is closed on Sunday.

When you phone (568-0202), you’ll hear Ms. Kunz or one of her assistants answer: “It’s great to be at Curves!” And it is.
