Desert Star Gymnastics in business with help from friends

Maricopa is lately talked about in a negative setting. I’m not dismissing there are problems, but there are a lot of positives in Maricopa. I truly believe that if we focus on the positives and be a little more flexible, that change could come sooner for all of the families in this town.

During the hectic summer I decided to expand and create my own gymnastics gym, after subleasing for the last two years. I have been very torn on this decision with the economy the way it is. I have something I can offer the youth in Maricopa, and I decided I would like to be a positive influence in this town to youth of all ages.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the amount of support my students, parents and my high school staff have given me.

One high school senior, Josh Hagen, has been extremely supportive. Josh works full time in the summer at Ace Hardware, and after work he comes in to help me at the gym. He has done much of the work, including minor construction on a volunteer basis.

I have two high school girls who put in many hours volunteering with painting and cleaning. It is interesting to be teaching on one side of the gym while parents pick up brushes and paint my walls on the other side.

I would like to thank everyone who had input in me getting started in my own spot. I hope to be able to provide a place for Maricopa youth to be safe and active.
