Desert Wind Middle School and Santa Cruz Elementary School were in lockdown Friday afternoon after Maricopa police received a call of “shots fired.”

Detective Colt Homan said an investigation is continuing but there was no evidence “at this time” of shots being fired. The schools have since reopened. The call came in from the 36000 block of Cartegna Lane.

“Because of the nature of the call, and because of the location of the school, that’s why it was lockdowned,” he said. Homan did not know how long the school was in lockdown.

A suspect, who might be involved in an aggravated assault, is being sought, Homan said. He did not have any specifics as to where the suspect was, nor the aggravated assault.

“We’re still putting all the facts in play,” he said.
