Downed power lines delay Legacy School’s opening

Legacy Traditional School’s opening day is now scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 4, following a mid-morning Monday accident when an 18-wheel delivery truck missed a turn and ran into a power line along Seven Ranches and Porter Roads on the south side of the Legacy campus.

As a result, nine power lines over a half mile stretch snapped, briefly cutting off power to some areas of the city as well as to the school. Electrical District 3 workers estimated that repairs would take eight hours. Fire and police department personnel also responded to the scene.

Legacy, which was scheduled to open Tuesday, also lost its newly installed phone lines, which won’t be repaired until Tuesday or Wednesday. Without power the school’s alarm system could not be tested in order to pass the fire inspection.

In a letter to parents issued by Legacy Representative Alan Hale on Monday afternoon, he stated, “We are so sorry that this accident happened; it was a terrible shock to us, and we are just so grateful that no one was hurt. With the delays caused by this power and phone outage we will not be able to start school until Tuesday September 4.”

Hale added, “We understand your frustration with delays and are so sorry that this happened. If you do decide to send you children elsewhere, we understand and hope you will reconsider us in the future.” He reassured parents about the quality of teachers and programs, thanking them for their support.

A Meet the Teacher night is now scheduled for Monday from 5 – 7 p.m. with classes set to begin on Tuesday at 8 a.m. until 2:40 p.m.

Legacy Traditional School will be having its first school party on Thursday, Aug. 30, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Teachers will be in attendance. Hot dogs, chips and other treats will be provided along with children’s activities.
